DOCTOR DINERO: NO A LO PENDEJO

While driving down from Los Angeles towards the border of Mexico, there is an unusual sign on the side of the road. It depicts a man, a woman, and a child all holding hands and running across the highway. The sign is there to warn drivers of the potentiality of people darting across traffic unexpectedly. In past years, people have been killed crossing the highway in an attempt to enter the United States illegally.

Why would anyone take that much risk? I have found that the most financially successful people in the world are willing to take that much risk—and more. Pero no a lo pendejo. The people crossing the border who are willing to run the risk of dying from the heat, the cold, oncoming traffic, or bandidos don’t just decide to take such risk because they are bored. They do so because they have a vision of a better life. They know that they have the potential for a better life if they can just cross the border. They come here and are not afraid to take action. They are willing to enter the United States and work hard for a better life. There is no such thing as falling into a comfort zone for them. (That is an understatement!)

So in my years of working with very wealthy Latinos, I have found that all of them have the following three financial success traits. If they didn’t have these traits, it would have been almost impossible for them to ever be successful in the long-term—no matter how much knowledge they had of investments.

3 TRAITS OF WEALTHY LATINOS

1. They all have a clear vision of what they want. They can literally see their future. As Steven Covey says, “they all begin with the end in mind.” Napolean Hill, author of the classic Think and Grow Rich, said that “whatever the mind can conceive and believe, you can achieve.” Knowing what you want dramatically increases the chances that you will get it. Without knowing what you want, it is almost impossible to have a burning desire to go after your dreams. Most people have very fuzzy goals. Zig Ziglar, the motivational speaker and author says it best, “Most people are wandering generalities.” The families crossing the border know what they want. Talk to them and they can all tell you in detail of their better life.

2. They all take calculated risks. All financially successful individuals take calculated risks. 100% of them. If you don’t, you will leave your money in a bank savings account earning 1%. Cowards don’t make money, but neither do pendejos. Notice that I said calculated risks based on wise business and investment information. Investment decisions based on greed or laziness never work out permanently. You need to get as much information as you can before you dive into any new business or investment venture. Remember that all decisions are based on some lack of knowledge. No one knows it all. All decisions are based on incomplete knowledge. Your job is to get the most information you can. But remember that fortune favors the brave. Brian Tracy, the motivational speaker, reminds us that, “you need to have the quality of courage.” The development of self-confidence, courage, boldness, and the willingness to move forward toward your goals, with no guarantee of success, is the essential requirement for high achievement.

3. They all take massive action. Have you ever sat around with your buddies drinking beer and discussing a great business idea that would revolutionize the business world and would make you millions. At least every friend I know has come to me with a great business, investment, or sales idea that they knew would without a doubt allow them to get rid of their Honda and get into a Porsche, out of the barrio and into a gated community. If I had a dollar for every friend who had a great idea but was afraid to tell me because I or somebody else might steal it, I would own half of Cancun. Once you have decided what you want and are willing to take the risk to get it, you need to take massive action. You need to remember that thinking determines what you want and action determines what you get.

These three essential qualities are found in all financially successful individuals. Do you have them? The wonderful thing is that they all can be developed. No one is born with these traits. What you need to do now is decide how badly you want it.
