DOCTOR DINERO: WEALTH IS JUST BS

You thought I meant bullshit. Wealth is nothing more than belief systems (b.s.). You can never be wealthy unless you share the belief systems of the wealthy. Having worked with wealthy Latinos for more than a decade, let me describe to you the nine beliefs they all seem to share. As you read through the nine beliefs, ask yourself if you share any of them.

HOW TO THINK LIKE A WEALTHY LATINO

1. Wealthy Latinos believe in themselves. They have a high self-esteem. They don’t worry what others say. They don’t let family or friends discourage or distract them from achieving their goals. Believing in yourself takes courage, especially when you are starting on your wealth quest.

2. Wealthy Latinos believe in blaming no one but themselves for their current situation. The word is accountability. Wealthy Latinos don’t point fingers. They don’t blame their parents, their childhood, the educational system, the economy, or anything else. They know that their only enemy is the one staring back at them in the mirror every morning.

3. Wealthy Latinos believe in continuous learning. Continuous learning comes in many forms. It comes from reading, listening to audiotapes, attending seminars or conferences, attending networking meetings, etc. No matter what the method, it requires investing time and money in yourself. If you are not willing to invest time or money in yourself to become wealthy, you might as well quit reading the rest of this article and check out the chicks on the other pages.

4. Wealthy Latinos focus on what they do best and delegate the rest. Wealthy Latinos focus on their strengths and delegate their weaknesses. They don’t try to do everything. They focus. The comedian Bill Cosby once said, “I don’t know the formula for success, but I do know the formula for failure, and that is trying to be everything to everyone.” You need to focus on your unique talents and consistently work on those talents.

5. Wealthy Latinos believe in using mentors. They know that someone out there has already been successful in what they are trying to do. Wealthy Latinos also know that no one can teach them what they have not done. They don’t waste their time asking family, friends, or acquaintances for advice if they know those individuals have never accomplished what they need to accomplish. If you are lucky, you will find a mentor near you. In other cases you may have to scour the country for a mentor. Autobiographies are a great way to start if you don’t have access to a mentor.

6. Wealthy Latinos believe in planning. Planning is the habit of being proactive. Wealthy Latinos don’t leave everything until the last minute. They don’t accept anything less than the highest standards. No one can achieve wealth if they have low standards. Wealth takes planning and planning takes time—lots of time. Planning also demands that you set aside some time to think. And as a wealthy person once said, “Thinking is hard work, that is why so few people do it.”

7. Wealthy Latinos believe in what goes around comes around. This belief is based on character. You reap what you sow. Taking short-cuts, cheating, lying, stealing, being envious, doing what you aren’t supposed to do when no one is watching, all boils down to your character. Poor Latinos think you have to do everything I just mentioned to get ahead, that’s why they are poor. And if they do become wealthy, it’s only momentarily. Wealthy Latinos lead lives of integrity.

8. Wealthy Latinos live a balanced life. Balance means an abundance of money, love, and health. As I have always said, “I have never seen a U-Haul behind a hearse”. You aren’t going to take anything with you. No one on their deathbed ever asks to see their bank account balances; they ask to see their loved ones.

9. Wealthy Latinos believe in giving back to their community. Giving back is the mindset of abundance. You can’t give what you don’t have. Almost all wealthy Latinos I know always gave first. If initially they didn’t have money, they gave time. Giving back to your community comes in many forms. Besides giving money, you can give your time by volunteering or mentoring.

So what do you think? Puro pedo? All I know, my friends, is that money talks and bullshit walks. See you next time.
