GAME REVIEW: SINGSTAR POP VOL. 2

You know those times when you’re singing your favorite rola in the shower and you think to yourself, “Damn, I’m a pretty good singer. I could’ve been a super estrella.” Well, put those fantasies to the test with Singstar Pop Vol. 2, the new Sony PS2/PS3 game release. Just be careful what you wish for, you may be in for a painful reality check once you hear what your amplified voice really sounds like.

Singstar gives you the chance to put your singing abilities to the test, as you sing along to the video of a song of your choice. There are 30 pop songs to choose from, such as Avril Lavigne’s “My Happy Ending” and Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous”. (Like I said, they’re pop songs.) Hit the right key and your notes on time to score higher points. If you’re home alone, then you’re stuck playing in solo mode. But when the party crew comes over, you can also choose from duet and battle modes. We definitely found this game to be a blast when you’re playing with a group of friends—especially if the lights are dimmed and the tequila shots are flowing.

And we found the replay feature to be super hilarious. The game allows you to listen to a repeat of your performance right after you finish a song. And that’s when the laughs begin, as you—and anybody in the room—gets to relive the painfully mangled lyrics and missed notes on the song you just butchered beyond recognition. It’s like listening to one of those singer wannabes trying out for American Idol.

As much fun as we had, we did have a couple of issues with the juego. First of all, 30 songs is not nearly enough to keep the fun rolling for more than one or two occasions. Our second gripe is with the songs themselves. Let’s just say, you may not find too many of your favorite songs on the game. (Of course there are different versions of the game that focus on other types of music—like 80’s or rock.)

Nevertheless, we give the game dos dedos arriba for its party fun potential. And don’t forget the game requires a set of Sony PS2/PS3 microphones, which are sold separately.
